    Is a ST585 v5 adsl2+ compatable

With our exchange due for upgrade in March I was wondering if it's compatable

I have had it for ages and it's done all I ask of it so don't really want to change it .

    Product Name:SpeedTouch 585
    Serial Number:
    Software Release:5.4.4.1
    Software Variant:BE
    Boot Loader Version:1.0.16
    Product Code:35921730
    Board Name:

    BANT-K

I'm pretty sure it is - or it can be.

I have an ST 585v6 but with software version 6.1.4.3 and that is running ADSL2+.

So, at worst you may have to download and upgrade the firmware. This is an easy task.

    Hi Ken,

YEP!! I can confirm what Sal has says the Thompson Speedtouch 585v6 is definitely ADSL2+ compatible. But YES! also can confirm you definitely need the firmware update to make it fully ADSL2+.

    Thanks for that info

I have checked and  Software Release:5.4.4.1 seems to be the latest one. At least what I can find.

Follow the links on this posting for v6.1.4.3 http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,2897.30.html

If you want to tweak the noise margin then this is the last version before Thomson crippled the router. I'd advise using DMT also, available from http://dmt.mhilfe.de/ and you will need DMT v7.35-->

NOP! I can confirm you CANNOT tweak the noise margin using DMT tool as the BT line management system will definitely override it. Go ahead tweak it too your hearts content but it wont make a jot of difference. I've already tried this & it doesn't work. Angry

NOTE:- You can no longer tweak the connections parameters on ADSL2+ as its controlled completely by the BT automated line management system. The only thing I think you can still tweak is your MTU values.

Dam that's a pitty as I use DMT to limit the minimum snr so the 585 does not restart every evening as the line noise varies quite a lot between night and day. Using this method the router as stayed connected at 7104 for 77 days now compared to a restart every night and a low data rate.

Don't think I want 21st cn any more.:(

    Thanks

I already use DMT and the forum link is for the V6 firmware and my 585 is a V5

I may be tempted to buy a later one from Zen.

I have a Vigor router that was great untill ADSL Max came along then just kept on re connection every evening so I got a 585 plus DMT

    Quite right Ivan

Tweaking ADSL2+ is not feasible. Senior moment on my part.

    Re: Is a ST585 v5 adsl2+ compatable

    Hello Ken,

I think I'm slowly getting my head round how ADSL2+ works. Forget tweaking anything, forget DMT tools etc the very best way to get the most out of 21CN is just to leave your router powered on & permanently leave it connected. Why? because the longer you leave it connected the better the results you will get from the BT line management system.

**Note of warning!!: with 21CN the very worst thing you can do is frequently reboot or tinker with your router. This is 100% guaranteed to completely rodger your BRAS profile. Mine dropped like a stone which was my own fault, its take about 10-15days to recover and now my speeds are slowly coming back up and showing better download speeds than before. I had thought it was a lost cause but the BT LM system has proved me wrong.

    Re: Is a ST585 v5 adsl2+ compatable

Just ordered a new SpeedTouch 546 from Broadband Buyer for £29 plus £5 carriage. Wish I could have got it from Zen but at over £50 well.

I don't need built in WiFi as I prefer a separate WiFi AP as it's easier and cheaper to keep up to date as speed and security change.

If I can't control the SNR any more with 21stCN then I hope it turns out to be a lot more stable than Max.

Before I used DMT to control the minimum snr my 585 would sync at 8128mbps and then fall over between midnight and 3am and drop to about 5500mbps and then go through the cycle over and over again. All this brought my BRASS down so much that the data rate would go below 3000mbps. Once I controlled the snr it now syncs at 7102mbps and stays connected (78 days at the moment) and gives a download speed of 5760mbps average.

If I start all that again it will most likely convince me to go with one of the LLU providers around here.

    Re: Is a ST585 v5 adsl2+ compatable

Just set up the new ST546 OK but when I ran DMT the site now says that the later firmware versions of Thompson routers have the caperbility to control minimum snr removed at isp's request. This means that DMT can't even monitor the snr let alone change anything Sad

The router synced at 8128 with a snr of 6db at 10am so I will see how it fares overnight and if I still get resyncs every evening then I will go back to the ST585 for now. It's a long time since I set the minimum snr on the old router so maybe (fingers crossed) the day/night snr ratio may not be so great.

I have set up the router with the same log in etc so as both the 585 and 546 both use the same model PSU then changing over from one router to the other is a 5 minute job.

    Re: Is a ST585 v5 adsl2+ compatable

I wondered why this router as become stable at 8128 then found this morning the my exchange as been upgraded a month earlier than scheduled Big Smile

The snr over night is now about 5.5 db where it used to be 2 db or less. I have decided that I would prefer 8mbps stable than 12 mbps unstable for now.

I don't think it's the exchange upgrade that's directly helped my line but probably new equipment generates less noise on my line.

    Only time will tell now.
