Dial-Up for ADSL users?

    Dial-Up for ADSL users?

I understand that the 'back-up' dial-up is only supposed to be used when the ADSL line is down. It was a surprise to me - when using it remotely to end up with the same IP!

Why not offer 'free' dynamic IP 0845 dial-up to ADSL customers? I ask because it would be useful to use Zen on the road. It would save having to reset the SMTP servers in all my Outlook accounts and be able to access the Zen newserver. A bit of effort but not worth a tenner for 'Dial-One' (otherwise I'd still be on my old Demon TAM!).

Surely the extra 0845 call revenue would be worth it? If you restricted it to one per account I doubt you would get much leakage from existing revenue earning corporate accounts?

The 0845 revenue would be fine. The problem would probably be the added support costs.
    Still its an interesting proposal.

The dial-up service we provide is a value-added service, it's not something we actively push and unless we were attracting significant numbers the income generated would not cover the costs in providing the service and there's many free dial-up providers who specialise in this already have an established userbase which we would not be able to compete with in the current market.

This is a nice service that zen provide a 0845 backup dial number.  My ADSL service was down last night and I just got my laptop out, unplugged the ADSL RJ11 cable from my router, connected it to my modem on my laptop.  Entered the Zen Internet backup ADSL service number, username and password.  dialed into the service and low and behold I was on the Internet within 30 seconds of my Internet going down.  Unfortionatly the Customer Service Support line was closed so I could not phone Zen to file a report.  Woke up this morning and low and behold my ADSL service was back on. Hurray!!!!

    Re: Dial-Up for ADSL users?

I find the dial up service useful when I am out and about (and therefore away from my ADSL landline). I really don't want to have to bother with multiple ISPs so although Zen provides this service, ostensibly as a backup to the ADSL line, it has broader applicability to me.

This prompts a technical question in my mind. When I'm away, I sometimes leave the PC running (I have server software that I like to leave on line). Even if I do turn the PC off, I invariably leave the router on. Nevertheless, I seem to be able to dial into Zen and pick up my normal static IP address. How does that work then?

Your PC at home will probably not be able to get internet access, as when you use the backup dial our network tends to route all the traffic for your IP address to the dialup connection, not the DSL.

Can you clarify this for me please?  I am about to go away for a couple of weeks and plan to make use of the backup dialup number from my laptop to check emails from time to time.  There will be no computers switched on at home but if I leave my router on (I usually do as my connection is very marginal at 9Km from the exchange) then presumably technically I will still be connected to Zen?  Can I still use the dialup or should I switch the power to the router off to enable me to use the dialup.  I don't want to get 500 miles from home only to find that I should have switched it off!

    Thanks.
