    Authenticated SMTP

Not strictly a webmail question but I couldn't see where else to post it.

Are there any plans to offer authenticated SMTP facilities? I often work on projects abroad and have sometimes have difficulty finding a method of sending mail if the client hasn't given access to their email system. I have Compuserve and Gmail accounts, but neither of these are particularly suitable for business use as I need to keep all the project correspondence within Outlook. It would be much preferable to simply pick up where I left off when I arrive on site.

Or do I need more than just authenticated SMTP?

    RE: Authenticated SMTP

I have the same problem, but you can use CompuServe from within Outlook. There is some information on the (now woefully out of date) Compuserve website.
The box said "needs Windows 2000 or better" so I installed Fedora Core 6

    RE: Authenticated SMTP

You need just authenticated SMTP, as do I, for precisely the same reasons.

Is there a policy statement on this - you have authenticated POP3 and you manage that well enough... how about authenticated SMTP? It would be very easy to prevent abuse of it. If BT can manage it, you guys should be able to do it in yer coffee break...

    RE: Authenticated SMTP

It has been mentioned before and there have been internal rumblings of this sort although I'm not aware of solid plans for rollout as yet. At the moment we have SMTP services on RAQ accounts which can be accessed from outside the network, they are authenticated by popping the account before sending email.

    RE: Authenticated SMTP

Thanks - will search for RAQ accounts.

It's just for when one's on the road - working on client sites in my case. You can generally SMTP through their firewalls, but not through yours, hence the webmail client. Which isn't as nice as my portable's Outlook installation..

    Re: RE: Authenticated SMTP

One solution - there are a couple of 3rd party authenticated SMTP services I have seen - I went with www.authsmtp.com - been working well.

    Hope it helps - Andrew.
