Cannot send emails from non Zen connection

    Hi Guys,

I have taken my laptop with me on holiday to Florida. Whilst I can download my emials I can't send any.

I have looked at the account settings and set the outgoing server needs authentication to be the same as the incomming server but no joy.
    Any Ideas?

Re: Cannot send emails from non Zen connection

    Hi Kevin,

I dont know what the solution to this problem is but I have seen this same problem with other ISP's too. Its something to do with the way networks behave and especially the way mail servers work. I saw a similar problem when I was a customer with F9 PlusNet, F9 users couldnt receive mail from NTL Telewest. I also suspect its because your trying to send from a completely different providor (a non zen mail server?). One mail server isnt responding to the other??

The SMTP server will only work form your home telephone number. You can use Zen's Webmail service though from anywhere.

It's something I'd like to address in the future.

I intend opening up our mailhosts for ASMTP/TLS which will allow people to use their laptops etc from any network and send via us. Essentially as long as you set your client up to authenticate against our mailserver over an encrypted link then you can send through it. At the same time I'll implement POPS, so you can read your email over an encrypted link.

This isn't going to happen in the near future however as there are other things in the email pipeline that need to be made public first along with a restructuring of the innards of the system to allow for future enhancements/expansion.

Re: Cannot send emails from non Zen connection

Any news of this ?   It should not be a great burden of maintenance, capital cost or even any significant increase in bandwith costs.

To be honest, now that people will often check there email from open WiFi points in Cafés or visiting other companies there is an urgent need for TLS / SSL to protect user's login details  for POP3.

I use another SMTP when away from my Zen ADSL line ( via SASL/ASMTP ) but the lack of security in checking my POP3 mail is a problem.   Web mail is not a practicable option.

It would be good for Zen to offer a modern TLS POP3 for incoming and SASL/SSL/ASMTP for outgoing mail.

    Hi,

I'd like to second this request.

IMAP support, SMTP access when remote from the Zen network, etc. are pretty much basics these days.

    Cheers

    D.

Re: Cannot send emails from non Zen connection

We won't be offering IMAP as part of our standard email offering. We offer POP3 email addresses as they are intended to be used in a 'transit' manner, ie email is delivered into your mailbox and then you 'read and delete' via POP3, thus meaning we don't need to store vast amounts of email as we would if we offered IMAP by default.

SMTP/TLS + AUTH is now in place however.

POP3S is in the pipeline and ought to be available in the near future (we need to modify some code to fit our needs).

Re: Cannot send emails from non Zen connection

    Hi,

when I am working away from home I can receive emails from my Zen account but get a 550 error when I try to send.  Is this due to the issues discussed in this thread?  Any idea when it might be resolved?

Re: Cannot send emails from non Zen connection

    Hi cjm,

Try setting your email client up as requiring authentication for your outgoing mail server, and enabling secure password authentication (SPA) for it.

    Thanks, Ammiel

Re: Cannot send emails from non Zen connection

I have same problem here in Abu Dhabi.  I have Outlook 2007.  Use zen in UK with no problems.  SMTP server set to mailhost.zen.co.uk.  I get 550 error if I try to send from here using local ISP.  I have tried setting outlook account smtp setting to "require authentication", and log on using..... (normal logins) and "require SPA".  This gives "Send test e-mail message: None of the authentication methods supported by this client are supported by your server." when sending a test message.  Does this indicate my ISP doesn't support SPA?

    Any other suggestions?   Many thanks.

Re: Cannot send emails from non Zen connection

Any chance of explaining how to set up client to use SMTP/TLS + AUTH?  I may not be doing what I think I should to solve problem in above post?  Many thanks.

I'm just bumping this. Has any answer appeared or have I missed further comments on another thread.

    Thanks

Re: Cannot send emails from non Zen connection

I was having similar problems from Outlook 2007 but have now solved them. IN email account settings I have ticked 'my outgoing server requires authentication' and ticked 'use same settings as incoiming server'. then under the Advaced tab I have selected TLS under the 'use the following type of encrypted connection'.  these are the only changes I have made and I can now send email from a non-zen connection.

I have not ticked require logon using secure password authentication or mucked around with ports.

    Hope this helps,

    H
