Any news of this ? It should not be a great burden of maintenance, capital cost or even any significant increase in bandwith costs.
To be honest, now that people will often check there email from open WiFi points in Cafés or visiting other companies there is an urgent need for TLS / SSL to protect user's login details for POP3.
I use another SMTP when away from my Zen ADSL line ( via SASL/ASMTP ) but the lack of security in checking my POP3 mail is a problem. Web mail is not a practicable option.
It would be good for Zen to offer a modern TLS POP3 for incoming and SASL/SSL/ASMTP for outgoing mail.
Jerry Nicholls:It's something I'd like to address in the future.
I intend opening up our mailhosts for ASMTP/TLS which will allow people to use their laptops etc from any network and send via us. Essentially as long as you set your client up to authenticate against our mailserver over an encrypted link then you can send through it. At the same time I'll implement POPS, so you can read your email over an encrypted link.
This isn't going to happen in the near future however as there are other things in the email pipeline that need to be made public first along with a restructuring of the innards of the system to allow for future enhancements/expansion.
