Re: Speedtouch rebooting when accessing iPlayer

Not had any iplayer problems with my s585v6 firmware 6.1.4.3 on Vista or XP.  I did have an issue with reboots when I tried to use the itv.com live service (which uses silverlight rather than flash).  I eventually worked out that it was due to me forgetting to change the XP mtu setting to match the value of my adjusted router mtu.

Re: Speedtouch rebooting when accessing iPlayer

I am having exactly this problem myself - frequent kernel warm restart when accesing Iplayer.  I am using a ST585 v6 with 6.2.29.2 software and a mix of XP and Mac Os X 10.5.4. I have noticed it mostly on the Mac as I seem to use those machines much more.  So are others in my family with a new 585 v7  Any workarounds yet?

Re: Speedtouch rebooting when accessing iPlayer

I haven't found any work arounds yet.

Are you connecting to the routers using the Macs AirPort (wireless) connection. This seems to be a common factor. I certainly notice that it's the WiFi connection that falls over first.

I think this is the source of the problem although I'm not readily able to check by connecting to the router with an ethernet cable as it's on the other side of my house from the Mac.

This issue appears to affect a very large number of Thomson products (including the BT Home Hub and the BeBox supplied by Be Internet/O2). As far as I can tell other routers aren't affected so it seems to be some issue between the Thomson router and the way AppleĀ implementsĀ the 802.11 standard. Can't think exactly why it's only the iPlayer that triggers the problem though.

Re: Speedtouch rebooting when accessing iPlayer

Ah this could be why I have had no problems. As my Thompson router did not support the latest WiFi inscription that my new laptop and EeePC used I disabled the Inbuilt WiFi and bought a separate netgear AP which sits next to the router and connects via a wired port.

Re: Speedtouch rebooting when accessing iPlayer

Mine still suffers and I go :

    MacBook Pro <- wifi -> Linksys WAP <- cat5 ethernet -> ST 608WL

I only connect to the 608's wifi when I'm upstairs and my Linksys's signal is poor. So I can still break it whilst essentially on ethernet.

Re: Speedtouch rebooting when accessing iPlayer

Please be gentle with me as I have only limited technical knowledge!

We have also begun to experience this problem with iPlayer.

We are running three machines wireless on a Speedtouch 585 v6 - one desk top with a Speedtouch dongle and two laptops wifi ready.  One laptop is only a few months old, mine is two years old but my son's desktop is five years old.

Yesterday (maybe due to recent upgrades on the BBC site?) he has started to experience problems.

After a minute or so of streaming on his desktop, the Speedtouch router goes down and displays only green lights - its takes quite some minutes to reboot.

Last night, all three machines were in use when the router crashed and rebooted and we wondered whether recent upgrading of the BBC iPlayer means that it now requires more bandwith than before and is struggling to stream with all three of us online at the same time.

Today, we tried my son's desktop with iPlayer for a Radio 4 programme with neither of the other two machines in use.  Same problem - would stream for a minute or so, then router goes down, just like last night.

My son's five year old desktop has only 250 MB RAM installed and I wondered whether low memory might be a contributing factor, or because he is using a dongle and is situated upstairs - though his signal is usually strong.

The other two laptops have 1 gig of memory installed, are wireless ready and used downstairs where the router is situated.  We are all running WXP or XP Pro, all with SP2.

Within the last two weeks, my son has installed Norton A/V 2008, and does not run a FW (only the FW in the router).

Prior to this particular problem, we would occasionally drop the connection when not streaming media but the router would pick up the connection again almost immediately.

This problem with iPlayer seems to produce a particularly distinctive reboot in that it takes longer to reboot.

The reason I mention the lower memory in my son's desktop is because this morning we tried iPlayer from the BBC site on my latop and although we only let it run for 10 minutes or so, which probably wasn't a very fair test, we experienced no problems - as I say, I've got 1 gig on this laptop.

The two laptops run Kaspersky A/V 7 with Zone Alarm Free (an older release, not the most recent incompatible with KAV version) and AVG free with Zone Alarm free (latest version).

Our BRAS profile flaps every few days between 2000 and 4000 and router stats average around 4,600 though sometimes dips lower than 3000.

We bought the Speedtouch router through Zen last November and have not updated it.

Similar issues with iPlayer on a BT user support forum.  BT support staff forum member advising that BT have found updating to the latest version of Adobe's Flash Player (9.0.124.0) solves the problem but that BT are talking to the BBC for a fix for Mac users.

Re: Speedtouch rebooting when accessing iPlayer

I had a poke around the iPlayer site last night and it does state that the latest version of Adobe's Flash Player (9.0.124.0) needs to be installed.  This might account for why I am not apparently experiencing problems with the router going down, at least when streaming radio, through iPlayer as my son tells me he has not upgraded his Flash Player for some time.  We'll sort this today and see if the router stops crashing.

Re: Speedtouch rebooting when accessing iPlayer

My son's now installed the latest version of Adobe's Flash Player (9.0.124.0) and also checked that he has scripting enabled.  After 8 minutes or so, there were no problems with the router crashing and rebooting.

I had my own laptop running a radio programme at the same time as him and there were no apparent problems with both of us streaming radio simultaneously or with him streaming radio and me TV.

He'll test for an hour this afternoon for a longer test - but it's looking hopeful.

Do you know what version you had installed before??

Re: Speedtouch rebooting when accessing iPlayer

    Hi Adrian,

My son can't recall when he last updated his previous version of Flash Player but his Add/Remove entry for this program had it listed as version 9.

The version he has just installed is v9.0.124.0.  As part of the download process for the latest version, a couple of other small related programs were also downloaded.  He didn't appear to have these with the previous installation unless, in that release, they were embeded within the main program and therefore not visible to us as additional progams.

I am assuming that v9.0.124.0 is a later release on v9.

So whether it is the difference between v9 and v9.0.124.0 that is now allowing him to stream without the router crashing, or whether it is the two extra elements that have made the difference, or both, or whether it was the case that the program he had listed as v9 should have been OK to run iPlayer but had not been installed properly or with all its elements, orginally - I cannot say.  But it looks promising that putting v9.0.124.0 on appears so far to have fixed the problem, at least for us.

Re: Speedtouch rebooting when accessing iPlayer

What's more of a concern to me is that the router shouldn't crash due to software versions. The version of Flash or iPlayer ought to be irrelevant. Something is either unusual with the data payload, or the behaviour of Flash/iPlayer is something that the router can't handle. I'm suspecting that it's probably something to do with the behaviour - maybe lots of parallel datastreams or similar - that might be filling up the (Hyper)NAT tables.

I'll have to have another play when I get some time.

Re: Speedtouch rebooting when accessing iPlayer

    Hi Jerry,

Yes, I agree, and thats what I've been working with on the Thomson support guys with.  What would be helpful is if you can check the # of active port counters, as I put in a previous posting.  However this is for a 608WL and I dont know if the 5xx series has the same interface/abilities.

Re: Speedtouch rebooting when accessing iPlayer

I'll endeavour to have a go tonight - the serial line is in, so I can see what that has to say. I'll be online looking at ovens tonight (new kitchen time) so whilst doing that I'll get iPlayer going.

Re: Speedtouch rebooting when accessing iPlayer

Well, the flash player thing doesn't seem to apply on the Mac as I'm already running Flash version 9.0.124 and still have the problems.
