    IChat, Aim, Zen & Error

    Hi all,

I have managed to get all my friends signed up and using AIM so we can video conference each other.

My friends all use PCs, and are successfully video conferencing each other, however, i can't!!

First of all i got an "ichat error -8" after researching this error, i was told to delete one of the files in preferences and it should work. (it was something like apple.com.chat.......) I deleted the file, but now get a different error, which says that I need to contact my ISP to  get the settings required.

Any ideas on how I set up ichat, with my aim account, and zen. A crib sheet (step by step) would be great.

I can see my 'buddies' in aim, i can see they have a web cam, but when we try to connect to each other (not at the same time!!) they get a  message saying i have declined the invite, and i get a message saying that I have not responded (even if i instigate the conference). I can not even voice call them (but skype separately works fine!)

    Please help
    Thanks
    Claire

Do you use a router to access the internet? If so, which model?

Was there ever any follow up or resolution to this post? I am having much the same problems myself.

    Thanks,

I also have this problem. I tried opening some ports suggested in other forums but to no avail.  I do have a router, its a Netgear FS605 v2.  I was just wondering if anyone has some step by step instructions on what to do about error -8

Re: IChat, Aim, Zen & Error

It seems as though the problem is the incoming data needs to be forwarded to the computer which wants to receive the video, the problem though is that AOL video appears to use a very broad range of port numbers for it's incoming video, everything from 1024-5000 which is a lot of configure for forwarding.

You can do this by looking up port forwarding for your particular model of router and directing them to your computer's IP address but the easiest way would be to use routed IP and set up your computer with a public IP address so the computer is directly accessible from the internet, rather than just your router but this has disadvantages with security and you need to have a block of IP's available to use which you would've needed to request at time of order.

I would recommend against using AIM for video and use something like skype which only uses a single incoming port for video which can easily be configured using guides available here: http://www.portforward.com/cports.htm this site also includes guides for forwarding the thousands of ports AOL video needs if you really want but I couldn't advise it.

Thanks. I came to the same conclusion after trying all the recommendations. I installed Skype and it just worked immediately, video messaging between Macs and PCs is easy that way. iChat isn't worth the hassle at the moment.
