Remote Access via VPN under restricted public access

Sorry if this post is too banal. This is not my area of expertise. I have managed to rig up the remote VPN access so I can get to the office PC from my laptop which seems to work most of the time. I have a basic undestanding of IP addressing and even got my head around subnet mask to some degree. I sometimes cannot connect from hotels when I am travelling and I believe this is when the subnet comes up showing 255.255.255.255. I am guessing that his has been done by the hotel server to stop me from sharing my internet access with other guests at the hotel ie by restricting my IP address.

I have my router set to dynamically allocate me an IP address above x.x.x.10 within the group as the PCs and printers at base are all on fixed IPs.  I have tried using a fixed IP address on my laptop of x.x.x.255 to try to comply with the subnet but I may not have fully understood that or maybe it is a reserved address.

I realise this is way down on your radar but could someone tell me if there is a way to get round this or maybe it is just a *** connection.

Thanks for any hints or tips,

    Ian
