So I'm using voip a lot for my calls - yet my rental charges from BT are still high :-(

It kind of takes the fun out of the voip experience.

Of course I need my land line to provide me with ADSL - but do I have to go through BT? Are there any other alternatives? I'll be honest, I don't have a clue what the market is like these days.

Any info would be appreciated (including impact to ADSL services provided).

 

I use VOIP Cheap and am very happy with it. Have a look at this URL; http://www.voipcheap.com/en/rates.html but I would avoid the uk site as you get a better deal with the .com version of the site.

Quality of calls is generally OK using a headset from the Pc, and the costs are very competetive.

Indeed with all the free UK landline calls you really do need to avoid the 084x and 087x rip-offs. See http://www.saynoto0870.com/search.php where you can find the geographical numbers for many companies.

If you are in an exchange area that has implemented Local Loop Unbundling (LLU) you have the option of Tiscali or other suppliers who will offer you a bundled (or do I mean bungled?)  service. But if you want to stay with Zen as your ISP then you should look at companies such as TalkTalk who will provide your calls. I use TalkTalk to route my phone calls.
