    Speedtouch rebooting when accessing iPlayer

Anyone come across this one before?
Whenever I go onto the BBC iplayer website and watch something my router spontaneously resets itself, normally when I try to leave the site or watch something else. It also seems to afflict sites that use the iPlayer (like the official Dr. Who site).

I have a Thomson 585 v7 router connected to the BT master socket (with an ADSL Nation faceplate) and connected to my mac using the AirPort connection. I'm running fully patched Mac OS X 10.5.3.

It's done it on four occasions now. Unfortunately the forced/triggered restart deletes the routers logs so I can't see if there is anything in there to cause it.

I don't seem to be having any problems with other sites (I can watch Youtube till the cows come home without issue).

    In a word, HELP!

Yeah, you're not the only one. I've spotted this behaviour with my ST608WL and the iPlayer content. I'll be using it for the kids to watch Charlie and Lola, or similar and it will randomly lock up. On investigation it's my router that's rebooted. No other site does this to it. I've unfortunately just not had any time to look into it.

Oh dear. I wonder what's causing the problem.

Glad it's not just me though.

I don't recall having this problem with my old (wired) netgear DG834. Haven't tested it with the ST connected by Ethernet though.

Re: Speedtouch rebooting when accessing iPlayer

I'm accessing my ST via wired ethernet and wifi - ie I have an access point on the wire ethernet - still suffers the same problem. Maybe if I get some time I'll look into it more. I do syslog to another box and I have the serial line available, so maybe I'll check the output of both. I must admit I am surprised that iPlayer can kill it but no other data sources seem to have the same effect.

Re: Speedtouch rebooting when accessing iPlayer

    Well

I'm glad to see these posts...

For months my speedtouch has been randomly rebooting...  I've been working with speedtouch/thomson support folks to diagnose and last week I had some symptoms that the iplayer might of been doing it.

Heres what happens for me...  basically my 608WL can handle 2048 simultaneous connections.

If I login to the speedtouch via telnet, and run "connection stats" I'll see that the # of connections spikes... I'll hover at 1000-1500 on a normal day.. but prior to crashing this will shoot to 2048 in a few seconds.  Then the speedtouch cant handle it and crashes.

Then the router comes back up.. DSL connects.. and a few seconds later it crashes out again, as all of the ports have again been used up by whatever causes the crash.

I have to say I've not been able to confirm its the iplayer, as my own seperate tests using iplayer Flash have failed to re-produce. My etherreal traces last week showed a user was watching some bbc stuff at that time, however thats not true for prior traces...

I've found one way of reducing the issue, is to create firewall rules with a deny-all policy. basically start with the initial deny-all default policy, then add in all the rules you want for day-to-day. Save this. Then, add an allow-all rule at the top, disabled by default. Save again, then enable it.  What happens here, is that the normal day to day ops work as normal, but if the ST reboots, then when it comes back up, it has a "defend first" approach. I found that this kept it from rolling reboots.

I'll forward this topic url to the guys at speedtouch.

Re: Speedtouch rebooting when accessing iPlayer

    Forgot to say this..

To see if this is the same issue for you do the following:

Login via telnet, and every 2s or so run the "connection stats" command. Use the up arrow to re-type quickly

Then on your browser, goto the bbc site and start streaming something. Note:  This isnt done using the BBCs iPlayer application, just using the flash-based viewer.

When I tested this myself, I was able to watch the port usage climb (albeit slower than when it crashes spontaneously). When I stopped viewing, the port usage would drop. I think it was opening UDP connections that the ST then had to NAT.

This suggests that the player open connections and doesnt close them OR that the ST isnt closing them down

You can also use the "connection clear" (check the help for the right command) command to force unused connections down during the testing.

Does anyone know how/where to download software updates for this router?

The link from the Thomson website goes to a business partner website.

That is the place unfortunately... Your expected to sign up there. Its a stupid system, and quite frequently it "forgets" my password.

Re: Speedtouch rebooting when accessing iPlayer

You can download Speedtouch firmware here http://www.speedtouchforum.de/viewtopic.php?t=1089

The forum is in German bit it's pretty easy to work out what's available for download (or use Google to translate?)

Re: Speedtouch rebooting when accessing iPlayer

Had a look. Unfortunately the only firmware listed for the 585v7 is the German version.

I'm not too keen on having all the menus in German as my language skills are rather rusty.

    Anyone got the English version?

Re: Speedtouch rebooting when accessing iPlayer

As a further update. I've just watched an entire Dr. Who Confidential without an issue.

The difference - upgraded from Mac OS X 10.5.3 to 10.5.4

Will need to do some extra testing to see if it's properly fixed though.

Sad [:(] Re: Speedtouch rebooting when accessing iPlayer

Looks like I spoke too soon. Just had a reboot watching something on the Radio1 website (which now uses iPlayer).

Re: Speedtouch rebooting when accessing iPlayer

I tried to get it to crash the other day, but with no success. It did however lock up when I tried viewing Top Gear - maybe it was trying to save me or something ;-)

Due to DSL woes today (ie no sync) I've attached the serial line between my 608 and my U5, which now has minicom running within screen. So, when I get a little time over the next few days to sit and watch internet telly I'll see if I can break it and see what comes out over the serial. I'm currently running the 6.2T version of the firmware which does at least seem to be more stable than the 5.?? that was originally on the router - ie the router use to crash on frst boot as could be seen from the unhandled exception report over the serial port !

Re: Speedtouch rebooting when accessing iPlayer

My 585 V5 behaves perfectly with iPlayer in either Vista or XP. The problem with ST routers is that if there is a problem they are a long while updating the firmware.

Re: Speedtouch rebooting when accessing iPlayer

Oh yeah, I forgot - one consistent thing I find searching for others with this symptom is Mac OS X. Interestingly I've only seen this problem when using my MacBook Pro. I've not really tried much from my wife's Vista PC but she does listen to a lot of radio via iPlayer, but that is of course lower bandwidth.
