Bronze - 3 MySQL databases, 1 Spare - two Joomla sites?

The least painful way to migrate from Joomla 1.0.x to 1.5 is to setup a totally new website and just copy and paste content. (okay, I admit, I don't have much content on the site I admin so this will be relatively easy.)

But, my question is. We have a Bronze account, and there is one spare MySQL database. Does this mean that in Fantastico I can just install a second instance of Joomla . (ie, existing is 1.0.x), copy my stuff accross, then point the address to the new site?

If it is all that simple, I could simply install a second instance of Joomla, copy my stuff accross at my liesure, then when it all looks okay, simply point the domain address to this new site.

(note, this is for http://www.bsoa.myzen.co.uk/ which uses the domain name http://www.sharpies.org.uk)

Or, is this not possible, and I actually have to create a whole new Bronze account, (ie for example register http://www.bsoa_new.myzen.co.uk) (But this would then mean paying for a second account)

At the moment it looks like the only option is for me to run a local webserver on my desk, install Joomla and MySQL etc etc... build my site locally, test it locally.......

but then there would be the big risk for the upload, as I would have to delete all the existing site online, then install Joomla 1.5.... and somehow upload everything, and hope it works.....

    Please help.

    Hi wdf,

It would be possible for you to install another copy of Joomla in a subdirectory of your current cPanel account and then get it working just the way you like it.  The problem comes when you wish to start using that site.  As the bronze account is intended to host a single website it's not possible within the interface to simply point your domain at the subdirectory.  You would need to remove the old joomla install and move the file content out of the subdirectory and into the root, this presents several problems, if installed using fantastico the cPanel would not like you simply moving the joomla files around, secondly if joomla has written configuration files with absolute paths moving them might cause problems.  As an alternative you could get creative with .htaccess files and redirect users directly to the subdirectory as though it was your root.  Another alternative which is just a mixture of my suggestion and yours, basically create the site in a subdirectory, when you've done setting up make a backup of your site database using phpmyadmin remove both copies of Joomla and install 1.5 again in the root (use same database name, username and password), them restore your database data into the new database.  This method relies on your joomla install only using the database (so no additional modules/themes etc installed).

I'm sure there are other methods which may be better but I don't have any direct experience of Joomla so can't really be sure.  Anyway hope this information is just going to confuse matters and has helped in some way :)
