    Nameservers

Right then, have I got this right?

    I have a hosting package.

I have parked my domain name www.optiglaze.co.uk under cpanel.

I can get to a page at http://www.justriml.myzen.co.uk/

My domain is registered with UKreg and I have entered the nameservers ns0.zen.co.uk and ns1.zen.co.uk

However I cant see my site at www.optiglaze.co.uk , am I missing something?

    Thanks,

    Rick

    Re: Nameservers

    Hello,

You would only use our name servers if you have purchased domain hosting from us, in addition to Web hosting. You'll need to change the name servers back to UK2, and set an A-record for 'www' to point to the IP address of the cPanel server.

    regards,
    Phil.

    Re: Nameservers

Well I will highlight where the confusion lies.

    At UKreg/Fasthosts it states;

Enter the nameservers provided by *your* new hosting company.

To host your website with *Fasthosts* you need use *our* nameservers.

Oddly (to me at least) I needed  to use Fasthosts nameservers which then opened up the option to point to the IP supplied by Zen. I think Zen would do well to make this clearer, especially as when I rang up to enquire about this I was given the nameservers ns0 & ns..... which do not work, at lest for the package I am on.

    Regards,

    Rick

    Re: Nameservers

    Hi,

Do you know which department you called through to, so I can ensure this is clarified?  One problem we have is that if somebody simply asks us for the name server addresses we provide them.  Technical Support are instructed to find out why they're needed (to determine if they are at all) but on some occasions that can be missed.

We do have a Knowledge Base article which advises of how domains should be used with cPanel:

    regards,
    Phil.

    Re: Nameservers

Hi, it was support, I perhaps should have made my problem clearer.

'Register the domain name with a 3rd party, and then instruct them to point the A record to your virtual host.'

I read the article you referred to but I could only find the above quote which may have helped me, I think it could be made clearer that nameservers need pointing at the domain reg hosts, rather than Zen's. That said it was also confusing from Fasthosts side. Anyway now that I know what an A record is and where to set it all is well.

    Rehards,

    Rick

    Hi there,

I've changed the text on that article - can you take a look please and see if that makes it clearer?

    regards,
    Phil.

    Re: Nameservers

Thanks, I hope it helps someone in the future whose 'nouse' is as limited as mine!

If I would change anything ir would be the word 'continue', as this is only relevant if you were hosting a site previously with the domain host, in my case I was trying to change the nameservers from one 3rd party web host to another.

For what it's worth Zen's service this far is refreshing, I recently migrated to Zen as my ISP and I was a certain degree of hassle but it was all nicely dealt with.

Likewise setting up hosting, there has been a little hassle but it is nice to be able to quickly get answers to questions.

    Many thanks,

    Rick

    Re: Nameservers

I have a similar problem here, but can’t for the life of me get to the bottom of it. I have registered a name with another provider. I have also bought a cPanel bronze web hosting package with Zen.

I’ve followed the instructions as in the link above, but my problem is this:

Zen is telling me to retain the nameservers from the people I've registered the name with.

But they are telling me that I’ve only bought the name from them and not the hosting, so there are no nameservers associated with the account at their end.

    Who is right? Both? Neither?

    Re: Nameservers

It can get confusing can't it? I think Zen's tech guys could do with explaining things better.

Anyway, at the registration company you do use their own nameservers but you need to point to your hosting at Zen and for this there is something called an 'A record'.

If you have a control panel at the registration co look for something like 'DNS settings' and see if you can find the A record, change this to the IP number you will see in you cPanel at Zen and all should be good.

Hope this helps and good luck.

    Re: Nameservers

Thanks. I've actually already changed the A records as you suggest. My problem is that the registration company is adamant that I can't use their nameservers, because the hosting isn't with them. I'll have to take it up with them again. But thanks for the advice - it definitely helps to know other people's experiences.

It's hard work innit? Though I would have thought that if you are *able* to change the A record that you *are* using their nameservers?

Does only Zen do things this way with an IP instead of a nameserver? It seems that hosting a site with Zen involves a lot of bouncing back and forth between them and domain reg companies.

Anyway I have my domains registered at UKreg/Fasthosts and they will let you use their nameservers, transferring from one reg company to another is quite quick and easy so it may be worth thinking about doing this. Or moving your hosting to somewhere that let you point a nameserver at them in what seems to be the normal way, which is what I have recently had to do.

    Re: Nameservers

If fact what else you can do is set up an account (free) with Zone Edit www.zoneedit.com .

You point your domains to their nameservers, then they allow you to enter the appropriate A records for Zen.

It's a bit messy, might give you a headache and IMO should be unneccesary but it may get you running.

    Re: Nameservers

Yes, I can't transfer the domain until a 60-day period has expired (apparently). And I'd like to use Zen for the hosting as they've been good with everything else. But this IP-rather-than-nameserver business does seem very inflexible and I may now have to look elsewhere. Thanks again for the input - nice to hear a voice of sanity in all this.
