I have to agree 5GB's is NOT an insignificant amount of data even if your limit is 25GB per month. I would think you would notice your router or modems lights flickering away for quite some time if that was the case.

"That is an awful big chunk  at 8Mbps that is over 16hrs of solid  download"

Really? 1gb takes me about 20mins only, averaging about 680-730kbps  1.5hrs should cover that 5gb

you need to monitor the connection and see what and where this bandwidth is going.

    Re: Disappearing Download Allocation.

YES! totally agree with you krom but so far nobody has agreed on exactly the best method for doing this or how? Zen can only say approximately when the bandwidth was used but not bye who or bye what kind of application or bye what kind of protocol.

**If this was an unsecured wireless connection the caused might be more obvious but not in this case the connection is encrypted using WPA2 PSK so that tends to rule out a drive bye attack. Unless a hacker can get round WPA2 which I've never heard of before. Its NOT impossible but its highly unlikely IMO.

Somehow I think ZEN could tell you when you last took a <insert whatever>... (if a court order were involved).

    Re: Disappearing Download Allocation.

Frankly, although x5GB of your bandwidth have been stolen or having magically disappeared there is nothing much that can be done in retrospect. I think you just have to right the loss off in this instance !!! :-(

**The real lesson or moral to this story is trying to find out how the bandwidth was consumed or taken, as for the bandwidth itself that's gone.

**Sadly, life's experience is full of losses and gains. Its just that losses are painful and come as a bit of a nasty surprise when you least expect them.

I think its best to try & be philosophical at the end of the day especially when there is little or nothing that can recoup the situation. Accept the loss and move on as life's to short to hang on to the feelings involved.

Not just a one off Ivan, go back to the original post, every Sunday for the past month he has lost 5GB.

    Re: Disappearing Download Allocation.

    Hi billyboyd,

oops!! your right but I still say its vital to get to the bottom of this problematic loss. I would suggest that next Sunday with Zens permission (or request that Zen help in proactive way to investigating this loss). Some kind of monitoring or measurement needs to be set up to track the connects use of the bandwidth specifically on a Sunday. This would as far as I can see be the only way to finally pin down the root cause.

**The user also needs to set up some form of connection monitoring too just in case it might be a drive bye attacker after all?

**After all bandwidth doesn't just disappear into the digital void, its being consumed some how?

    jeffbb:

    Hi

quote "every Sunday for the past  month I've downloaded roughly 5-6gb of data"

That is an awful big chunk  at 8Mbps that is over 16hrs of solid  download . OK you may have a faster connection but it will still be many hours involved .

Netlimiter2  is a useful tool ,its freeware . from the link below

     http://www.netlimiter.com/download.php

It monitors in realtime and keeps historical data , It also monitors LAN and WAN traffic separately  .Showing which Application is using bandwidth.

    Regards Jeff

That is what I would also use, great tool.

If it takes 5Gig each Sunday you really only have the use of 5Gig in total.

    That is bad.

Can you turn wireless off and just use wired connection, that way you can rule out the wireless all together.

I think if it was me I would note usage on Zen on Saturday and turn the router completely off until Monday then I would check the usage again on Zen

    Re: Disappearing Download Allocation.

I had to go to Edinburgh for a few day from the 11th to the 14th Dec and return to find another 11gb gone. The router was left on but my PC was switched off for all this period. I was thinking of getting a new PC to eliminate the errant software if any but this weekends experience seems to point at some problem with the router.

Thanks for all the suggestions by the way.

    Re: Disappearing Download Allocation.

Are you absolutely certain you have security enabled on your router, double check it. Reason i ask is because my Speedtouch has on rare ocassion reset itself to default settings.

This sounds like it could be a classic case of why these file sharing laws that they are trying to bring in won't work.

    Re: Disappearing Download Allocation.

I would by now have either

1/ changed the encryption for a stronger key

2/ Disabled the onboard WiFi in favour of a seperate AP

3/ Dumped the wireless router and bought a new one.

    Re: Disappearing Download Allocation.

    Hi,

Why not simply physically unplug the connection every Sunday (given that it appears to be on a Sunday that the bandwidth gets gobbled). I know its a pain but it might be one way to prevent this. Just a thought ?

**Unplug the router from the filter or faceplate.

**YES! All very good suggestions Ken. I Agree.

    Re: Disappearing Download Allocation.

If you have a Draytek router have a look under Diagnostics / DHCP Table and NAT sessions table. There may still be traces there if someone has been connected recently.
