Where has all the spam gone?

Spam seems to have disappeared over the last couple of days.

    I've done nothing.

Whatever it is that's happened long may it continue.

If you find out and the fix is transferable to non zen hosted e-mail accounts let me know will you as my domain is getting flooded with spam :)

Hope you and yours have a good Christmas and New Year by the way.

    Hmmmm.... just me then.

Actually my Zen email is not much poluted as I've only had it a couple of years so it's never been as openly used as my previous email addresses.

The one I get most spam on (or did) is a Claranet account I've had since 1995.

Even so neither has had any spam over the last couple of days; all else seems to be working fine (subscribed stuff, ebay, paypal etc; the stuff you actually want).

If I find out what's happened I'll offer it for sale. ;-))))

What measures do you have in place to stop spam getting in? I hate to see any spam getting to the mailbox.

I use a number of measures to fight back. Postfix is my MTA and as well as a variety of checks to ensure coventions are followed (fqdn required etc .. reverse lookup to valid domain etc etc) it also hooks in to RBLs to block known spammers. In addition, I have my own local blacklist where I hurl insults across the information super highway by way of custom 550 reject messages. I've also taken to looking up the supernet of the offending spammer and blocking it on the firewall.

I get very little spam through now.

My next step is implemetation of a Tarpit. Instead of blocking these bastards - I'm going to drop them in to a subnet with a Labrea server on it and point them at an unused IP address. The Labrea server will listen for the arp requests and 'own' the ip in question, acknowledging the communication requests and then taking a long time to do nothing - stopping the spam server from tearing down the connection for approx 15-20 minutes.Moohahahahaha.
