    DECT phone issue with 21CN

I thought I would treat myself to a new home telephone and bought an iDECT C5i twin set. I know I live at the end of a very long phone line and my line is very sensitive, but the phone knocks my SNR right down and made it very unstable. I've been playing with it (repositioning it) all evening and finally given up. After 6-7 reconnections, I've put my old fashioned phone back on and the SNR has shot back up and is stable again.

I thought I'd just post my issue in case anybody else has connection problems. Peed off that I've thrown £64 down the drain, but I'd rather have a stable internet. Modern technology isn't always an improvement!!! Rant over!

    Hi,

I'd say there was absolutely nothing wrong with your intentions but sadly its a well known & documented fact that DEC home phones can & do interfere with routers, especially wireless routers. A close friend of mine had her DEC phone sat next to a D-Link router & they were always complaining about the router not being able to hold a stable connection. When I pointed out that it was the DEC phone causing the problems they were really surprised. She replaced the DEC with a wired handset and never had any further problems.

**If the phones are new why not take them back & get a refund, you are well within your consumer rights too do so. But you will need proof of purchase i.e. receipt.

I am not sure this will help or even if its still available with 21cn lines, but you can call BT and get them to turn up the line gain which might negate the problems with your new telephone.

Now I dont know if It will or it they still do it, but maybe its worth a try and if it doesnt work, get them to turn it down again.

Just another crazy idea that I get from time to time.

I took it back to Argos and got a refund. I had to go through the bin to get all the packaging back and spent an hour working out how it all fitted into the little box lol. Luckily, I kept the receipt. Lesson learnt!

If it's radio interference from the DECT base getting into the line then maybe removing the 3rd wire from the extensions may have helped. I have a dect phone system with 4 hand sets, the base unit is plugged directly into the I Plate along with the router and they sit right next to each other and I get no problems at all.

No, it wasn't caused by wireless interference, I got a sparky friend to have a look before I took it back. It was the power supplies. If you put your hand around the DC power cable, the SNR went up 2db, take your hand away and it went down again. I tried fiddling for hours, putting tin foil around the cables, moving their positions etc. He said it was caused by dirty power supplies. The power blocks that plug into the 13amp sockets were very cheaply made.

I had the same problem with a scanner I once had. When it was plugged in, it caused so much interference that the adsl kept knocking down.

Although the iDECT phone was a mid priced phone, it didn't feel or look as though it was a quality product. Maybe I wouldn't have the same problems if I bought a more upmarket phone. iDECT are made by Binatone. Maybe a Panasonic or other well known make would be better made.

Most people probably wouldn't have any issues, but I know my line is about as long as you get for adsl and the smallest changes seems to make a huge difference.

A clip on ferrite choke on the cable next to the psu would have probable stopped the  rf radiation then.

Switch mode psu's are getting to be a pain these days and a lot of people don't bother to unplug their mobile phone chargers after use.

Another make would be OK probably, my Panasonic Dect phone psu is right next to the router.
