**YES! I agree hardware has come down in price but nobody ever mentions
how that is achieved? nor the cost to human life, to human well being
(almost slave labor in computer factors in the far east & china),
nor to the environmental impact of depleting metals & resources to
make computers? i.e. shiny new laptops don't grow on trees, etc.

Don't forget that wages are linked to cost of living ivan. What is low to us may not be low in China compared to what people normaly earn there working on the land etc which is why they flock to the cities.
Eventually the Chinese will want to buy what they make for the west and then the cost of living will rise and so will wages and we will move on to some other country, maybe the UK by then which is slowly becoming a cheap place compared to elswhere.
China is using it's low wage economy to become a major player in the world so don't blame companies here and in the USA for taking advantage of low cost manifacturing and don't forget that Japan did the same 50 years ago and look what they achieved.
Also the UK did the same during the industrial revolution. Don't feel to sorry for the cheap labour of the present like india and china as they will be the big spenders in a few years taking advantage of the cheap labour in Europe.
The wheel of time turns.
