RE: BBC Multicast Trail, Unable To Get It Working

Got it working with the Zyxel 660HW-61 in SUA NAT and Full Feature NAT mode. To do so I had to disable the firewall so I need to find the correct firewall rules to get round that.

    It does work though :-)

Apparenly Zyxel support and also registering with an ISP that support the trial so they can test their kit and provide better support.

    ....or so they said ;-)

RE: BBC Multicast Trail, Unable To Get It Working

I found this post on ADSLguide where someone has managed to get it working on a Cisco...

    http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Board=zen&Number=2328006&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=

    !
    ip multicast-routing
    !
    !
    interface FastEthernet0
    description Connection to LAN
    ip pim sparse-dense-mode
    ip igmp helper-address udl Dialer0
    ip igmp proxy-service
    !
    interface Dialer0
    description DSL Dialer.
    ip pim sparse-dense-mode
    ip igmp unidirectional-link
    !

This has only been tested in a NAT environment

If you can try that and confirm it works or not then I can add the cisco to the list.

Any idea if the D-Link 504 will work? Im using a block of 5 IPs so im guessing thats what you are referring to as "routed" mode, ie no NAT?

RE: BBC Multicast Trail, Unable To Get It Working

According to what I've seen on another forum the Dlink 504 should work. If you can try it and confirm if it does or not then I can add it to the list.

RE: BBC Multicast Trail, Unable To Get It Working

According to PlusNet it DOES work http://usergroup.plus.net/bbcigmp.php but thats probably in NAT mode.

Also, does it work with the Windows Firewall enabled and if so does it need special settings?

An interesting note though, that page reports that the BBC Multicast service is currently DOWN!
If that means down on PlusNet or down at the BBC is unclear, but if its down at the BBC it would certainly explain why its not working for anyone at the moment.

RE: BBC Multicast Trail, Unable To Get It Working

I think I'll be highly dis-chuffed if I've just gone out and purchased an allegedly-compatible router (Voyager 240) because I couldn't get my X4 to work and it turns out the reason it wasn't working was because the service was down. I'm writing this as I get back from the shop.

No mention of it being down when you visit http://bbc.co.uk/multicast and nothing I can find on Zen's site.

RE: BBC Multicast Trail, Unable To Get It Working

I think thats just plusNet (or that status is out of date). It was working here yesterday, when plusnet was still showing down.

RE: BBC Multicast Trail, Unable To Get It Working

    Thanks for that.

As Zen don't mention the Voyager 240, I'll report on whether or not it works later.

RE: BBC Multicast Trail, Unable To Get It Working

Ah well it IS PlusNet, the ISP with many ups and downs. ;-)

Im going to have to figure whats going on here though, I just read that Windows Firewall is meant to allow IGMP but I think its probably blocking UDP though. The question is, what do I need to open? The whole multicast range?

RE: BBC Multicast Trail, Unable To Get It Working

I've still yet to get my Zyxel to do it's thing.

Funny thing, as soon as I try to connect to a stream, the router goes loopy and pings shoot up to 2000ms!

I've got the firewall rule, I've enabled IGMP on the WAN side (took some digging in the telnet interface and help from the nice folks at Zyxel).

I shall make it work damnit!!!!!

RE: BBC Multicast Trail, Unable To Get It Working

And the BT Voyager 240 works.

    Firmware Version 2.18.01.13_a023g1.d15g
    Boot Loader Version 1.0.37-5.5.24

Just turn on the IGMP proxy and you're off.

I have the 240 connected to a switch and the switch to the Mac so it's a fairly complex setup and it just worked.

Decent enough quality those real player streams. Couldn't play the H.264 and as for Windows Media Player on the Mac? I don't think so!

    Still, Real worked well enough.

RE: BBC Multicast Trail, Unable To Get It Working

Thanks for the info - I've added this to the list.
For the H.264 stream try using VLC, not quicktime player to view the stream. The BBC are aware of the problem, and say this is a problem with the current version of quicktime player (bourne out by the fact it works in VLC) Note that you will need a reasonably powerful computer to decode H.264 streams.

    @David Rickard ->
Have you tried the instructions in the PDF file for the 662HW? See the Multicast Router's sticky for the link.

Also don't forget to try different streams. If Real doesnt work then try the Windows media play and H.264 streams too.

RE: BBC Multicast Trail, Unable To Get It Working

    SUCCESS!!!!!!!

I've got my Zyxel Prestige 661HW/61 FINALLY to connect.

The instructions posted in the PDF are close, but not totally.

The UDP port mentioned is wrong in my case. I needed to use 5556/UDP for Realplayer, and Windows Media Player wanted 5050/UDP for some reason.

Otherwise, it now works, and it possible.

    I'm using Full-feature NAT.

Any tips on which 'addon' for Quicktime I need to make the H.264 stream work? It's the only stream I can potentially get working between my PC and my Mac (which is Intel based). It seems Realplayer isn't yet a universal binary, so it doesn't play too well!

RE: BBC Multicast Trail, Unable To Get It Working

I've got the plain ole speedtouch 330 modem and the muticast

works - but only with the Opera browser - don't ask me why.

I've tried I.E. and Firefox and no luck.

RE: BBC Multicast Trail, Unable To Get It Working

heheh I followed the sticky instructions for the Linksys WAG354G and it worked straight away. Pretty impressive stuff (although I'm not really a fan of TV these days).
