BBC Multicast Trail, Unable To Get It Working

I am using a Zoom X5V modem/router and have IGMP and IGMP Proxy enabled as advised by Zen support. I am getting the following error message when trying to view the content:
'This server is configured to support only multicast connections. Please contact the content provider for more information on listening to this broadcast'
Has anyone managed to view any of the multicast content any advice on things I could try to get things working?

RE: BBC Multicast Trail, Unable To Get It Working

Maybe it's a Zen or BBC prblem then?

RE: BBC Multicast Trail, Unable To Get It Working

Are there any pointers that could be offered to a draytek user?

RE: BBC Multicast Trail, Unable To Get It Working

I don't think you'll be able to get it working on a Draytek (at least with current firmware) Even in routed mode we've been unable to get that working during our tests.

It does work with the BT voyager 205, but I think you have to enable IGMP via the CLI if I remember rightly.

For other hardware look for an "IGMP proxy" option, and check its enabled.
Should work ok with any USB modem providing your software firewall doesnt block the IGMP enquiry messages that get sent every minute or so asking if you wish to joint the stream.

Anyone that does get it working please do post here saying what hardware you are using, and which of our ADSL gateways you are connected via (tracert www.zen.co.uk for a command prompt, and look at the first hop past your router)
    Kindest regards,

RE: BBC Multicast Trail, Unable To Get It Working

Is the problem that the drayteks will not forward or pass those igmp packets?

RE: BBC Multicast Trail, Unable To Get It Working

    * YES *

They do not know anything about multicast or IGMP and so if you have a Draytek, forget any chance of being able to watch BBC multicast video streams.

RE: BBC Multicast Trail, Unable To Get It Working

I seem to recall from a post back in autumn that one of the mods explained these entries in the draytek log as due to the multicast system:

    "DoS ip_option Block 62.3.82.18 -> 224.0.0.1 CD ra PR 2"

Is it possible this misidentification of the multicast process as a DoS attack is interfering with its functioning?

Does the Multicast work with the Netgear DG834v2?

RE: BBC Multicast Trail, Unable To Get It Working

I'm using a SpeedTouch PC (yes, it's ancient, but it is a very solid piece of connection kit that has low overheads when used in a server that acts as a router). I gave the BBC multicast trials a go, on the first few attempts to view a channel I was getting the 'Buffering : 18%' with WMP9 but afterwards all I've been able to get is the following error :

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the server is busy. Try again later.

Ok been playing around a little bit more, I can now occasionally get it to buffer up to about 20% max and then it stalls. Most of the time though I'm told the server is too busy.

RE: BBC Multicast Trail, Unable To Get It Working

It doesnt work for me either

Im using speedtouch v4 router and I tested with windows media player, real media player and quicktime player....

  • Watch with Real 10
  • Watch with Windows Media 9
  • Watch in H264 format
  • All of them dont work..

this link ->  http://www.bbc.co.uk/multicast/container.shtml?stream=6&type=0&channels=2  gives the following error message:

"This server is configured to support only multicast connections. Please contact the content provider for more information on listening to this broadcast."

But zen is in the list! Somthings wrong at bbc.

RE: BBC Multicast Trail, Unable To Get It Working

There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the streams.

They work fine here (watching BBC1 now) using a Belkin wireless G Router.

RE: BBC Multicast Trail, Unable To Get It Working

Anyone had any joy with a Netgear DG834 ???? I saw the previous post advising -"For other hardware look for an "IGMP proxy" option, and check its enabled."........ I don't know how to check if this is available with the DG834.

It does seem strange, the last post was the first one I have seen that someone can actually receive the multicast service at all !!!!
