    Ubuntu and Looking-Glass

I installed Looking-Glass on Kubuntu about a week ago. (http://www.sun.com/software/looking_glass/details.xml), &  I've been very happy with it. Last night a friend dropped round with a new shiny laptop with MS Vista installed   I haven't used Windows for a few years, & I have to say I wasn't terribly impressed. I showed him Looking-Glass running on one of my machines, AMD AthlonXP 3000+ cpu, a nVIDIA GeForce 5200 & 1 gig of DDR RAM. His jaw dropped! Big Smile

For anyone interested in installing it, see here:-

It always seems to me that the main purpose of the various 3D desktop systems is to show off to Windows users.Big Smile I've got no use for them myself, but I'm just a boring old fuddy-duddy.

Got to agree with roseway on this. I have installed beryl on PcLinuxOs and yes it does look pretty and I'm sure its the future for desktop systems but after spinning the desktop cube a couple of dozen times I started to wonder what the hell the point was?

    Boring old fuddy-duddys-are-us

    Re: Ubuntu and Looking-Glass

I'm back to good ol' KDE on Kubuntu.. Well Looking-Glass & Beryl are ok, & the only point AFAIC is that it demonstrates that you don't have to buy Vista & upgrade all your hardware to get the "All Singing, All Dancing" eye candy that windoze users seem to want.  JMHO!

As for plain old functionality, I prefer FreeBSD. Big Smile

While I hate reviving old threads, I had to say that I tried Beryl the other week. While yes, it was very pretty and nifty, as far as practicality goes it was a nightmare. Yes it's fun to show off with, but it doesn't help productivity Embarrassed

    Re: Ubuntu and Looking-Glass

    Hi,

Aero Glass is a pain in the ass!! & have you seen how much RAM you actually have to have installed on a system before it runs with anything like good performance. ( I heard that Microsoft had demo machines with 4GB of RAM) Oh!! not to mention that you'll need to spend atleast £100 on a new all singing & dancing graphics card with 512megs mem on it. Oh! and then theres the small problem of drivers for hardware to run with Vista even if you've thrown your overdraft at the new system.

**Come on!! its nothing more than Microsoft Bloatware, as an OS it humongus, its horribly BIG!! in size.

**All that eye candy I find a massive turn off TBH.

**When I saw the new Vista Ultimate interface I nearly fell off my chair, its so like Mac OS X I couldnt beleive my eyes ( I was using Mac OS X back in the year 2000 at work, talk about Deja Vou!!).

**Talk about trying to re-invent the wheel, please!!

    **WGD (windows genuine disadvantage)

    **WGB (windows genuine bloatware)

Sadly, the general public still seem to fall for the same old cheesy Microsoft cliche's & lies about how Vista is the best & most productive version of windows ever. I am NOT convinced & am yet to be impressed. Oh!! & YES!! I have installed Vista numerous times now & the setup routine is dreadfull. At times you have no idea what an earth its doing. Its so bad I thought it had crashed several times. One & a half hours later I finally had a working Vista system.
