    Zen Useage tool & FireFox 3 b 1

    Hi,

    Just a quick note really, to let other users know that if you download & install the Mozilla Firefox version 3 beta 1 release of the browser. Then the Zen usage tool wont work because its not compatible with this version. You also loose any of the add on's, themes & fancy color schemes but having said that version 3 beta 1 is noticeably quicker , is said to be more secure & has superior memory management.

    When you say not compatible do you mean it actually doesn't work for some reason or do you mean firefox just refuses to work with it? If the latter then you can force it by going to about:config in the address bar and right clicking the list and creating a new boolean option called extensions.checkCompatibility. Set it to false and then restart the browser. It might work!

    Re: Zen Useage tool & FireFox 3 b 1

    Hello xtaz,

    NOP!! the actual Mozilla Firefox installation process completes with an error message saying the following add-on's are not compatible with this version of firefox. And no! my zen useage tool disappeared and so now I have no useage stats in the tool bar.

    **So this being the case I havent even tried to re-install it, as the message is very clear & exact.

    In the configuration file which comes with each extension there are lines which say 'minVersion' and 'maxVersion'. You could edit the 'maxVersion' line to read

    maxVersion="3.*"

    and then launch FF again. In Linux the file in question is an XML file called install.rdf and I'm assuming that it's the same in the Windows version. It's this file which FF reads in order to determine if the extension is compatible and which accounts for the error message which you got.

    Hello roseway,

    Thanks for your reply, I had a look at the FF beta 1 folder and found the install.rdf but how do you edit it? what application can be used to open edit this file?

    Hi,

    Have now removed Mozilla FF 3 b 1 and rolled by to FF 2.0.0.9 and all is working fine again including the Zen usage tool. Including all my add-on's & plug ins. Its obvious that FF 3 is not ready yet and has more development required. But it does look quite promising though.

    .rdf files are plain text files, so you can edit them with any text editor.

    Hi,

    YES! thats true enough, I think I got off lightly on this occasion. Some attempts to upgrade can be an utter disaster as not all upgrades are a step forwards or an improvement. But I'm sure you know what I mean.

    Cheers mate! Ivan
