    Vista Gadget

    Hi All

I remember being one of the original beta testers for this and at the time it was said that a Vista gadget would hopefully be in the pipeline.

I was just wondering if this was still the case?.

    Cheers.

    Re: Vista Gadget

I don't believe a Vista gadget is in the current development plan (although the web service is available, so there's nothing stopping anyone else building one).

It was initially proposed, but dropped later on.

Carl (who developed the .NET client) may be able to comment further

    Kindest regards,

Ok James, No problem, I was just wondering if anything came of it.

    Cheers.

    Re: Vista Gadget

I simply wish I had the time!

I would like to develop one and if time allows will look to do this however obviously the business has many priorities and it's always a struggle to justify developments like these which are non-critical. I would encourage anyone else who is a budding developer to have a go though and may be able to offer some support.

Feel free to post in this forum if anyone is interested.

    Thanks

    Carl

    Re: Vista Gadget

    Ok Carl.

One thing I just noticed that James said was that it was dropped, Why was this?. Operating system that will be becoming more and more popular.

I am not a programmer but all the blurb I have read about Vista gadgets is that they are very easy to make and dont take much time.

From a Vista user point of view this would be great, Also the checker has to be manualy started as it will not auto start, but I think I already read that you 'may' look into it.

    Cheers.

    Re: Vista Gadget

I think the word dropped is not the right one for the situation.

The initial plans for the broadband web service were that we would develop the service and a simple open source client that could be used as a reference for anyone else wishing to deveop their own clients. In the end we developed 3 clients: Windows Forms .NET, Firefox and MAC dashboard and a customer has developed a Perl client.

The time we spent on the project was far in excess of the initial plan due to a lot of added features, especially on the .NET client which we decided to include following feedback during the beta testing program.

The situation now is that there are simply far too many other projects which the business deems more important and developing a VISTA gadget is on the "nice to have" pile!!!

Regarding the auto-start on VISTA, this is a "bug" and has been tracked on our systems and will be looked at.

    Hope that makes sense

    Carl

    Re: Vista Gadget

I'd also like to see a Vista Sidebar gadget but as a new customer I also don't want Zen distracted from it's core values, i.e. being the best ISP, because so far the service has been 1st class. Party!!!

As an aside, would be cool to have a Windows Home Server add-in that showed the same information and if Zen developed an on-line backup companion to WHS that would be even better. Big Smile
