    Windows Update: Browser Choice Screen

I'm trying to avoid installing the EU-imposed 'Browser Choice Screen' that Windows Updates is trying to install. I can't dismiss it altogether or 'until later' as I usually do with updates I don't immediately need. It warns that it can't be uninstalled once it's done. I expect I'll do it by accident eventually.

Has anyone seen the effect of this update? How much of a nuisance is it? I'd like one day to try other browsers, but not under duress.

I have three home machines, and I'll have to teach the rest of the family what to do when they get confusing messages they haven't seen before. I really don't want to be 'offered the opportunity' to download something every time I start the machine. If I did ever install an alternative browser I'd have to teach the family how to drive it, and their feet never touch the floor long enough for me to do that.

Any information gratefully received. I'm currently using IE7 on XP/SP3.

Re: Windows Update: Browser Choice Screen

If you run windows update manually the page gives you the option to hide the update. It then will not show on auto updates any more.

Daft and unnecessary updates is what you get when polititions get involved with software.

Re: Windows Update: Browser Choice Screen

I know we are supposed to get a choice screen, but for some reason I dont get the screen ? not that I am worried, I am more curious than anything.

Possibly because I am using a technet version of win7, but I have tried lots of times last week and today to update but, when I look for updates, it comes back as no new updates found and no browser choice screen shows up.

I do already have Firefux installed and Opera, I need it to directly mess with my routers java script, otherwise I would not have Opera installed.

Maybe the reason I dont get the choice is because I already have alternate browsers installed ?

Ach I dunno, but if you ask me, the EU needs to be shot in the face with a hairy ballsac

I've seen nothing of it either.

Like you I'm not worried and just curious.

    I use Firefox.

I'm with the Americans on this (and it's not that often I am): we need a fully armed population to protect ourselves against politicians...

You dont have to use the the Windows update,  you can download any browser (providing you are using windoze, IExp doesnt work on Linux) whenever you want from the browsers own web sites.   And select that browser as the default if you wish.

I use Firefox for the Windows PC's but quite like Apple Safari,   and Firefox and Opera on the Linux pc.   I have tried Google Chrome and whilst its quick there are some

features missing that the others have.

Dont be tied to Microsoft for downloads or selections

Re: Windows Update: Browser Choice Screen

I think most people here already use another browser instead of IE8, I cant recall the last time I used IE as my main browser, ok I use it for sites that have problems with firefux etc, but thats about it, my main/default browser for years has been something other than IE.

Also, I think a few of us, well I am in anycase, but I think most are just curious as to what the browser choice screen looks like, as we havent seen it even after trying windows updates.

But in anycase, I havent used IE as my default browser for years, firefox was the main browser I have used with a couple plugins, but I am starting to not like firefox  due to its bloatedness and slowness in a certain few areas, I suppose that happens with all good browsers after a few years, the devs cram in as much *** as they can to compete with others and sadly forget what made them popular to start with.

As for chrome, I must admit its quick, but as you say it is lacking in features, sadly lacking if you ask me, but if they can throw in a good few features whilst keeping its speed and security I would be tempted to bite and use it as my default.

    > due to its bloatedness and slowness in a certain few areas,

You are not kidding there: it's getting very bad.

I can't do without it though because of an addon called Rikaichan.

I still use IE if I want to keep streamed video as I'm not really sure what Firefox does with this (something very odd as far as can make out) and IE treats it very simply (provided it's not overly flashed).

I thought I replied to this very shortly after you replied this morning, but it doesn't seem to have got posted, sorry.

     What I said was...

"OK, done it, on all three machines. You have to use the 'custom' settings. Thanks very much, Ken.

Re: Windows Update: Browser Choice Screen

Turned on my pc today and shortly after the new updates windows popped up and the browser choice app is available but unticked in the new updates list, since it cant be uninstalled I aint installing it to just see what it looks like, so hidden update it shall be.

If you have more than browser installed it doesn't appear even if you install it (I obviously have IE and Firefox 3.6 installed)
